CHAPTER 12

We land with a thump in a massive clearing at the bottom of the cavern, where all the other dragons are landing. My hands are ice cold from the flight, even when we stayed above ground in the desert. I look up, far up, to where the camps are. I spot my dragon kings on the edge, looking right down at me. Together, they look invincible and, not for the first time, I wonder what they see in me. My heart leaps into my chest when Arden steps off the cliff edge, falling elegantly before shifting into his fierce black, red-tipped dragon. One by one, all the dragon kings jump into their massive dragons that spread their wings out and soar around the cavern together, collecting dragons to follow them. Terrin’s voice fills my mind. “They are kings to all dragons.”

In this moment, I see it. The dragons around me roar as they look up, some almost seem like they hiss, but one by one, they incline their heads. All but my dragon, who watches them like they’re his enemies. I pat his neck. “They’re my friends.”

“Liar. My senses are brilliant in dragon form.” My cheeks burn at whatever he is scenting. “They are the others from the prophecy.”

“What is this prophecy, Terrin?” I demand.

Terrin huffs, stretching out his wings. “You’re not ready to hear the truth, my rider.” I lean back, crossing my arms. I go to protest, but his voice fills my mind. “We all are together from now until time ends. We’ll have plenty of moments for me to explain everything to you. First, you must learn to ride on my back so we can fight as a team. You nearly fell off. More than once. That will not do going forward with my plan.”

“You’re very cryptic, you know that?”

“It’s almost as if my entire life was planned for this moment.” He laughs in my head as he lowers himself down. “Your friends are over there with their weaker dragons.”

“That’s not very nice, Terrin.” I follow the direction of his head to see Hope on the back of a gold dragon that is long and has a massive tail compared to its thin body. I bet her dragon is fast. Behind her is Livia on the back of a silver dragon that is chunky, with smaller wings and a thin mouth. The silver one tips her side, forcing Livia to fall off the side of its wing and onto the ground. I don’t need to be close to see the curses Livia is shouting with a mouth full of sand.

“It is true. The silver one is unpleasant and will not be trained easily. The gold has a temper,” Terrin explains. “Troublesome dragons for your friends.”

“They can handle themselves,” I answer. I’m arguing with a dragon. I bet the dragon queen from Game of Thrones didn’t have this issue. “So be nice. Please.”

Terrin huffs a laugh before doing exactly what the silver dragon did to Livia. Terrin
